Switzerland Travel Guide 2025: Alps, Lakes & Cities for Indians

Switzerland — land of snow-capped Alps, glacial lakes, chocolate, watches, and mountain railways — has been the dream European destination for Indian travellers for generations. Here is everything you need to plan your Swiss adventure.

Visa: Schengen Switzerland

Switzerland uses the Swiss embassy in India for Schengen visa applications (not the French/German one). Apply at BLS International Service in your city.

Getting to Switzerland

• Direct flight: Swiss International Air Lines: Delhi–Zurich (~9 hours)
• Connecting: Emirates, Qatar, Lufthansa via Gulf/Frankfurt
• Fares: ₹60,000–1,10,000 return

Switzerland by Region

Zurich (1–2 Days)

Switzerland's largest city and financial capital.

• Old Town (Altstadt): Narrow medieval lanes above the Limmat River. Grossmünster twin-towered church (free entry).
• Bahnhofstrasse: One of the world's most expensive shopping streets — Rolex, Hermès, Swiss chocolate shops.
• Museum of Art (Kunsthaus): Significant Impressionist and modern art collection.
• Lake Zurich: Boat cruises in summer, lakefront swimming (free public pools called "badi").
• Day trip: Rhine Falls (40 min from Zurich) — Europe's largest waterfall by volume. Take a boat to the rock in the middle for an adrenaline rush.

Lucerne (1–2 Days)

One of Switzerland's most beautiful cities.

• Chapel Bridge (Kapellbrücke): 14th-century covered wooden bridge with painted panels — the most photographed bridge in Switzerland.
• Lion Monument: A dying lion carved into a rock face — Mark Twain called it "the most mournful and moving piece of stone in the world."
• Old Town: Car-free medieval centre, painted facades, morning market.
• Fondue/Raclette experience: Lucerne has excellent traditional Swiss restaurants.

Mountain from Lucerne:

• Mount Pilatus (2,132m): Steepest cogwheel railway in the world (48% grade). Stunning panoramic views. Cable car down the other side creates a circular route. CHF 72–90 roundtrip depending on route.
• Mount Rigi (1,798m): "Queen of the Mountains." Great sunrise or sunset views over 13 lakes.

Interlaken & Jungfrau Region (2–3 Days)

The adventure capital of Switzerland, between Lake Thun and Lake Brienz.

Jungfraujoch — Top of Europe

• Take the cogwheel railway from Kleine Scheidegg (reached from Interlaken via Grindelwald or Lauterbrunnen) to 3,454m.
• At the top: Sphinx Observatory (3,571m), Jungfrau Plateau, Aletsch Glacier panorama, Lindt chocolate shop, Snow Fun Park (sleds, ski)
• Tickets: CHF 213 round trip from Interlaken Ost. Book at jungfrau.ch. Good Weather Guarantee: if cloud covers the summit, you get a voucher for 50% off a future visit.
• Travel time from Interlaken: ~2.5 hours each way (total day trip).

Lauterbrunnen Valley

• A straight-walled glacial valley with 72 waterfalls pouring off the cliffs
• Staubbach Falls: 297m, drops off the cliff directly into the village — walk behind the waterfall
• Trümmelbach Falls: 10 glacier waterfalls inside the mountain (accessible by lift, CHF 14)
• Cableway up to Mürren and Grindelwald for hiking

Adventure in Interlaken:

• Canyoning (CHF 100)

Grindelwald / Wengen / Mürren

Geneva (1 Day)

Switzerland's French-speaking city on Lac Léman (Lake Geneva).

• Jet d'Eau: 140m water jet in the lake — Geneva's symbol
• Old Town: Calvin's Geneva, St. Pierre Cathedral, Maison Tavel
• CERN: The world's largest particle physics laboratory — free guided tours (book 15 days ahead at visit.cern)
• Palais des Nations (UN European headquarters) — tours available
• Lavaux vineyards (UNESCO): terraced vineyards along the lake shore — day trip from Geneva

Budget for Indians

Switzerland is one of Europe's most expensive countries:

Style	Daily Budget
Budget (hostel, supermarket, limited activities)	₹7,000–10,000
Mid-range (3* hotel, restaurants)	₹12,000–20,000
Luxury	₹25,000–50,000+

Save money:

• Supermarkets (Migros, Coop) have excellent ready meals (CHF 5–10) — much cheaper than restaurants
• Many hiking trails and cable car viewpoints are free
• Picnic by the lake — a sandwich from Migros + a Swiss view is priceless

Best Time to Visit

• Winter (December–March): Snow, skiing, Christmas markets — the classic Switzerland. Jungfraujoch is open year-round.
• Summer (June–September): Hiking, swimming in lakes, green valleys, all cable cars running
• April–May and October–November: Shoulder season — fewer crowds, lower prices, mixed weather
