Greece Travel Guide 2026: Santorini, Athens & Islands for Indians
Greece — ancient history, dazzling blue-white architecture, olive groves, and turquoise Aegean waters — is one of Europe's most photogenic and spiritual travel destinations. This guide covers the essential Greece experience for Indian visitors.
Visa: Schengen Greece
Apply at VFS Greece in your city. Greece's Schengen visa has a relatively straightforward process and shorter appointment wait times than France or Italy. Apply 3–4 weeks before travel.
Getting to Greece
- No direct flights from India to Greece currently. Connect via:
- Emirates/Flydubai: Dubai → Athens (~4.5 hours from Dubai)
- Turkish Airlines: Delhi/Mumbai → Istanbul → Athens
- Lufthansa/Air France: via Frankfurt or Paris
- Total travel time: 10–16 hours from India
- Fares: ₹50,000–90,000 return
Athens (2–3 Days)
The Acropolis — The Crown of Ancient Greece
The most important archaeological site in the Western world:
- Parthenon: 5th-century BC temple of Athena, still breathtaking despite 2,500 years
- Erechtheion: Famous for the Porch of the Caryatids (female figure columns)
- Odeon of Herodes Atticus: 2nd century AD amphitheatre still used for concerts
- Combined ticket (€30): Covers Acropolis + 6 other ancient sites (Roman Agora, Olympieion, etc.)
- Go at opening time (8 AM) to beat the heat and crowds
Acropolis Museum
One of Europe's finest museums — built to house finds from the Acropolis hill:
- The museum's glass floor reveals excavated ancient streets underneath
- The original Caryatid statues (the ones on the Erechtheion are copies)
- Superb café with Acropolis view
- Entry: €15, free on the first Sunday of each month
Plaka Neighbourhood
The old town beneath the Acropolis — neoclassical houses, jasmine vines, souvenir shops, tavernas. Most charming in the evening. Walk up to the Monastiraki flea market for vintage and antiques.
Cape Sounion (Day Trip, 1.5 hrs from Athens)
Temple of Poseidon on a dramatic cliff above the Aegean — one of the most striking ancient sites in Greece. Go for sunset (it's breathtaking). Return to Athens by evening.
Santorini (3–4 Days)
The most iconic Greek island — volcanic caldera, white-cube architecture, blue-domed churches.
How to get there: Fly from Athens (45 min, €30–80 on Aegean Air) or take the overnight ferry (9 hours, €40–80 cabin).
Oia Village
The most photographed spot in Greece — white houses cascading down the caldera cliff to the iconic blue-domed churches. The Oia sunset is world-famous; claim your sunset spot (on the castle ruins) at least 2 hours before sunset.
Fira (Capital)
- Cable car from the old port to the caldera town (€6 up, €6 down) — or 580 steps
- Walking path from Fira to Oia (10 km, 3–4 hours, spectacular caldera views)
Beaches
- Red Beach: Dramatic red volcanic cliffs, accessible by boat from Akrotiri
- Perissa & Perivolos: Black sand beaches with beach bars, loungers, water sports
- Vlychada: Surreal pumice stone formations and white cliffs
Wine Tasting
Santorini's volcanic soil produces unique white wines (Assyrtiko grape):
- Santo Wines Winery: cliff-edge tasting with caldera views (€22 for 3 wines)
- Domaine Sigalas: top-rated producer
Akrotiri — Minoan Pompeii
3,500-year-old city buried by the same volcano that created the caldera. Well-preserved ancient buildings — the "Minoan Pompeii" (€14).
Mykonos (2 Days)
Known for whitewashed windmills, beautiful beaches, and Chora old town.
- Little Venice: Seafront cafes right above the water, spectacular at sunset
- Windmills: The Instagram symbol of Mykonos — walk up at sunset
- Paradise Beach: Famous for daytime beach clubs and parties
- Remezzo / Scorpios / Nammos: Legendary beach clubs (not budget-friendly)
Crete (4–5 Days, if time allows)
Greece's largest island, with a distinct identity:
- Heraklion: Minoan Palace of Knossos (Europe's oldest civilisation, ~2000 BC, €15)
- Chania Old Town: Venetian harbor, lighthouse, atmospheric lanes
- Samaria Gorge: Europe's longest gorge (18 km hike, €5 entry — genuinely challenging)
- Elafonissi Beach: Pink sand, shallow turquoise lagoon — one of Europe's most beautiful beaches
Island Hopping from Athens
Ferry options from Piraeus port (30 min metro from Athens):
- Athens → Mykonos: 5 hours (€40–60 economy)
- Athens → Santorini: 5–8 hours (€40–70 economy, €80–120 fast ferry)
- Mykonos → Santorini: 2–3 hours fast ferry
- All ferries: book at Ferryhopper or Grimaldi Lines 2–4 weeks in advance in peak season
Greek Food for Indians
Greek cuisine has many naturally vegetarian dishes:
- Horiatiki (Greek salad): tomatoes, cucumber, olives, feta — completely vegetarian
- Spanakopita: Spinach and feta pie in filo pastry
- Tiropita: Cheese pie
- Gigantes plaki: Giant beans in tomato sauce
- Hummus, tzatziki, taramosalata: As mezedes (starters)
- Halloumi: Grilled cheese (Cypriot-Greek)
- Loukoumades: Fried dough balls with honey and walnuts
Budget Guide
| Style | Daily Budget |
|---|---|
| Budget (island guesthouses, local tavernas) | ₹5,000–8,000 |
| Mid-range | ₹10,000–18,000 |
| Luxury (5-star caldera view hotel, Santorini) | ₹25,000–80,000+ |
Note: Santorini is significantly more expensive than other Greek islands. June–August is very expensive; May and September offer better value.
